How would you define the word average?
By
Of course, there’s the webster definition. I usually associate average with meaning normal or typical, yet if you were to say to someone “You’re average looking” they would be offended wouldn’t they? Would you? Yet, it basically means normal. Or, if you were to say “You are of average intelligence” Again, I think people would be offended, yet again it would essentially mean you are of normal intelligence.
How do you define the word average?

Being normal; not being the best, but not being the worst.

I would define it as medium, normal, middle, in between, or median. For example, if someone said I was average looking, I’d figure I’m in between being ugly and being attractive. haha

We would rather not perceive ourselves as average. We would rather think of ourselves as something important and unique. Especially Americans where the sense of individuality is so important. Not everyone can be a movie star or a world leader, hence the term average.

A family with a boy and a girl, a dog and a cat. They live in a small 3 bedroom house, and drive a family car. They make me sick!

[edit] Synonyms(constituting or relating to the average): mean
(neither very good nor very bad): mediocre, medium, middle-ranking, middling, unremarkable
(typical): bog-standard (slang), conventional, normal, regular, standard, typical, usual
Neither very good nor very bad; rated somewhere in the middle of all others in the same category

Average does mean normal. I think people are offended by the use of average when being personal, like you said their looks or intelligence, because we all want to be better than normal. If you use it for inanimate objects though, people are not offended… i.e that was an average meal in an average restaurant.

A description that basically sums up someone or something that doesn’t break the mold. Most women don’t like to be average.

average is just like normal… its always changing for example if in 2007 the majority of ppl who wore socks while sleeping, were concidered NORMAL, or AVERAGE, you obviously were normal. but if studys show that in 2008 that the majority of ppl DIDNT wear socks while sleeping, ’sleeping with socks’ changes to being ABNORMAL, so technically there is no such thing as normal
or average as average of these #… 4 5 6 7 just add them and divide it by how many # are there 4+5+6+7=22 22/4= 5.5
