Look at several dictionaries. Use a thesaurus. Check out every related word listed in these sources. Look up quotations using the word. Use a reverse dictionary. Study books about etymology. Hunting for the word that accurately conveys our meaning can be fun; and take as little or as much time as we wish to continue the pursuit.

Search through your Thesaurus.
I can usually run down a word I’m looking for – finding a word that comes close and eventually I get it.
Or I punt and ask my husband or call my daughter.
It can drive me nuts, at times. It’s like being on a scavenger hunt for a word.
